Home Maintenance Tips

by Steve Porter

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and holidays are just around the corner, there are things to look forward to this time of year. Get your house ready for the winter before you get a jump on a holiday prep.  Here are some of the tips to make sure your house is ready for the winter!

Check paths, stairs and railings for safety

Take a walk around your home’s exterior, check your stairs, railings and walkways, and do necessary repairs as needed.

Clean out exhaust fans to prevent mold

Fans in your home help clean out smells and moisture out of your home.  Take time to clean to ensure that they are working efficiently.

Check your drainage

Tackle any slow drains in your home before they become clogged.

Examine the sump pump

If you have a sump pump in your basement as protection in case of flooding, make sure it is working properly before the rainy season really gets going, and then repair or replace it if needed.

Maintain your roof

Taking care of roof issues will also help the heating and cooling systems of the home operate more efficiently, and prevent leaks in the roof that lead to water damage.

Touch up your home exterior

A pristine exterior paint not only increases your home's curb appeal but it also helps protect its trim, flashing and siding from damage from the elements.

Inspect your window and door seals

Take the time to inspect the seal around your windows and doors. Add or replace worn weather stripping around the doors, windows and caulk or any gaps when needed.

Check bathtub caulk and repair if needed

While cleaning the bathroom, notice the condition of the caulk around the tub. Cracked or worn out caulk can allow water to seep into your home’s framing. If you spot a problem area, get it replaced as soon as possible.

Deep-clean bathrooms.

Aim to schedule a deep cleaning of the bathrooms so a quick surface wipe-down will be all you’ll need to get things looking spotless again during the holidays.

Get a jump on a holiday prep! We are officially in the holiday season and the big days will be here before you know it.
